News: Genre and Genre Hybrids Seminar: Jonathan Rawlinson & Simon van der Borgh

Prsented by Film Victoria, this seminar will examine how to work with genre and genre hybrids, and how to incorporate genre elements into your work. Simon van der Borgh and Jonathan Rawlinson will lead a practical, interactive workshop exploring film genre for writers, directors, producers and developers.

Why Genre and Genre Hybrids?

  • Bad genre may be easy, but great genre is incredibly tough; and
  • Genre Hybrids (such as SHAUN OF THE DEAD) and dramas that incorporate genre elements (such as LANTANA) are a great way for independent films to appeal to a wider audience.

About Simon van der Borgh

Simon works with some of the most promising, up-and-coming talent in the film business of the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Simon has worked with a number of writers, directors and producers at different stages of their careers on screenwriting programmes include Taika Waititi (Oscar-nominated TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT), Ivana MacKinnon (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, SCOUTING FOR BOYS, THE DESCENT: PART 2), Stephen Sewell, Steve Kearney, Josh Wakely, Robyn Kershaw, Rachel Perkins and Nick Ward (STICKMEN).

About Jonathan Rawlinson

Jonathan ran the First Film Foundation identifying, developing and promoting new filmmaking talent. Initiatives run by First Film ranged from script development programmes, short film production schemes, international talent showcases and publications. Jonathan has worked with a range of talent and produced series for Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (director and writer of the recent UK box office hits HOT FUZZ and SHAUN OF THE DEAD and co-creators of cult sitcom SPACED), David Walliams and Matt Lucas (writer performers on UK hit TV series LITTLE BRITAIN), amongst others.

Eligbility to Attend

Preference will be given to projects that have been funded by Film Victoria in the last three years.

The seminar will run from Sunday 22 March to Tuesday 24 March inclusive.
